Designing Around the Pearl

Working with pearls is not simply a matter of selecting a beautiful gem and placing it into a setting.

Sometimes the jewellery is adjusted to suit the pearl. Sometimes calibrated pearls are selected to fit a fixed design. In other cases, the pearl or mother of pearl comes first, and the silver work is developed around them.

The Serena Ring, the Medusa Ring and the Hibiscus Ring illustrate these three different ways of working.

Serena: One Design, Different Pearls

The Serena Ring was designed before a particular pearl was chosen.

Its broad silver structure can take different types and sizes of round pearls. A white South Sea pearl may be paired with clear stones, while a darker Tahitian pearl may be surrounded by black spinel. The stones can either echo the pearl’s colour or create contrast.

The main body of the ring remains the same. Only the diameter of the conical cup beneath the pearl is adjusted to suit its size. The cup stays straight so that the pearl is seated vertically.

It also serves several practical functions. It supports and protects the lower part of the pearl while concealing the post, the drilled area and any trace of adhesive.

As with most pearls mounted on a post, the pearl is partially drilled and secured on a twisted wire with glue. The twisted surface offers more grip than a smooth wire.

The pearl is mounted only after the metalwork is complete. Soldering, stone setting, polishing and plating must all be finished first, as the pearl should not be exposed to heat or the workshop processes used earlier in production.

Choosing where to drill is part of selecting the pearl.

In general, the least attractive area is used as the base. Pits, pinpricks or other natural defects can often be hidden inside the cup, leaving the stronger part of the pearl visible.

This does not mean that every irregular pearl is suitable.

If a pearl has too many rings, wrinkles, flat areas or strong colour variations, it may be rejected for a prominent setting such as Serena. A focal pearl is seen individually, so its overall quality matters more.

That same pearl may still be suitable for a strand. In that context, the visual balance of the complete sequence matters more than the perfection of one pearl in isolation.

This is an important distinction. Pearl quality is not judged only by a fixed list of defects. It is also judged according to the role the pearl will play in the finished jewel.

For Serena, the pearl must work convincingly as the centre of the ring. The design is best suited to round or near-round pearls, generally from about 8 mm upward.

The silver structure remains recognisable from one Serena ring to another, but the pearl and surrounding stones allow each version to develop its own character.

Medusa: A Repeatable Pearl Composition

The Medusa Ring follows a different process.

Here, the silver base and the pearl layout are established first. The design uses calibrated freshwater button pearls, making it possible to reproduce the composition with reasonable consistency.

Each pearl is mounted individually on its own peg. The silver base underneath is flat. The raised, domed surface is created by combining different pearl sizes with the corresponding peg heights.

Before any pearl is fixed, the complete arrangement is tested.

All the pearls are positioned on their pegs without glue so that the spacing, height and overall balance can be checked together. Although the pearls are calibrated, small differences still matter within such a closely packed composition.

The first requirement is that each pearl fits the space allocated to it. When one does not sit correctly, it is usually replaced with another pearl of the same nominal size rather than forcing a change to the silver layout.

The smaller pearls are fixed first because their spaces offer less room for adjustment. The larger pearls provide slightly more tolerance.

With calibrated freshwater pearls, major differences in colour, shape and lustre are usually limited. The main challenge is therefore not grading each pearl individually, but making sure the full arrangement works as one surface.

The pegs are soldered to the silver base before polishing and finishing, and the pearls are mounted only at the final stage.

Once assembled, every setting is tested physically. Each pearl is pressed firmly and checked for movement.

This matters because repair becomes far more complicated after all the pearls are in place. A broken peg cannot simply be soldered again without first dealing with the surrounding pearls, which cannot safely be exposed to the heat.

Medusa is therefore repeatable, but repeatability does not remove the need for careful fitting and final testing.

The calibrated pearls make the layout reproducible. The quality of the finished ring still depends on how the individual elements work together.

Hibiscus: When the Material Comes First

The Hibiscus Ring introduces mother-of-pearl rather than a complete pearl.

Mother-of-pearl and pearls are not in the same material form, but both are composed of nacre. Including Hibiscus here shows what changes when nacre is used as a surface to be carved rather than as a complete gem to be mounted.

The flower is carved specifically for the ring, but not from a rigid technical drawing.

The carver is given a mother-of-pearl cabochon and freedom to interpret the hibiscus. The main requirement is that the carving retains enough volume.

How much relief can be created depends directly on the thickness of the cabochon. A thicker piece allows deeper carving and more pronounced petals. A thinner piece naturally limits the amount of volume that can be achieved.

The carved flower therefore comes first.

Once the carving is complete, the silver ring is designed around that exact piece rather than around a standard measurement.

The mother-of-pearl flower is held mechanically with prongs. At its center, a small bezel-set gemstone is fitted into a recess prepared within the carving.

In this case, the design develops in response to the material already in hand. The shape, depth and proportions of the finished carving determine the silver construction that follows.

Three Ways of Working

Serena, Medusa and Hibiscus begin from different points.

With Serena, the ring design remains fixed while part of the setting is adjusted to suit the pearl.

With Medusa, calibrated pearls are selected and tested against a predetermined layout.

With Hibiscus, the carved nacre element comes first, and the silver ring is designed around the result.

None of these methods is more correct than the others. The choice depends on the material and on what the design is intended to achieve.

What they share is the need to plan around the limits of pearl and nacre.

The visible face influences where a pearl is drilled. Its role in the jewel affects how its quality is judged. Calibration makes repetition possible but does not eliminate fitting. Nacre thickness determines how much volume can be carved. Because pearls and mother-of-pearl cannot be exposed to soldering heat or aggressive workshop processes, they are added only after the silver work, stone setting, polishing and plating are complete. 

The finished jewellery does not reveal every one of these decisions. But each of them affects what can be made, how it is assembled and how reliably the design can be repeated.
